Know Your PAN Structure

In a written note, the Ministry of Finance informed the Public Accounts Committee that PAN was generated using five parameters identifying a specific individual viz:-

à Full name

à Date of Birth/incorporation

à Status

à Gender in case of individual

à Father’s name in case of individuals (including married ladies)

These five fields, referred to as `core fields’ were considered essential without which PAN could not be allotted. The Ministry used phonetic/sounded algorithm to ensure uniqueness. PANs were allotted centrally by using customized software for all-India uniqueness that generated a 10 character number on the basis of the information of the five core-fields of the person in the following structure:

What is PAN?

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric identifier, issued by Income Tax Department. Each assessee (e.g. individual, firm, company etc.) is issued a unique PAN.

1-5 fields are alpha (A to Z)
6-9 fields are numeric (0-9)
10 fields is alpha (A-Z)

1. Forth field of pan denotes assessee status :

à for individual="P"

à for Company="C"

à for Trust ="T"

à for partnership firm="F"

à Body of Individual:"B"

à Association of persons:"A"

à HUF="H"

à Local authority:"L"

à Govt.="G"

à judicial artificial person:"j"


2. Fifth field of PAN denotes NAME

à In case of individual: Surname/last name(as given in pan application)

à for ex. in case of Ram Kumar(individual)

à 5th field will be "K"

à 4th field will be "P"

à In case of Ram Kumar Gupta (Individual)

à 5th field will be "G"

à 4th field will be "P"

In case of All Other Assesees (not confirmed for all the assessee)

à 5th field will be first letter of Name/first Name

à for ex : In case of Suresh Jindal (HUF) (confirmed)

à 5th field will be "S" (first letter of First name i.e Suresh)

à 4th field will be "H" (for HUF)

à for ex: in case of ABB LTD (confirmed)

à 5th field will be "A" (first letter of First name)

à 4th field will be "C" (for company)


Is it mandatory to file income tax return if i have PAN

This question has been asked by most of people who have a little knowledge of income tax, so i am going to tell you that

"No you don't need to file income tax return if you have not taxable income. There is optional for you to file or not. "

W.e.f. 01.04.2009 the NSDL has stepped up the cost for PAN Cards (New PAN / Change / Correction) from present Rs. 60 [plus Service Tax to Rs 85 plus service tax.


Thus, now one will have to pay Rs.94.

Lost Your PAN Card - क्या आपका पैन कार्ड खो गया है


First of all don’t panic. It is very simple to reapply it. Most of the people think that to apply PAN is longer process and it takes even longer when to reapplying it. But reapplication of PAN is a very simple process.

How to Get New PAN Card if Pan Card Lost? Step by Step

First of All If you have lost your PAN card, you need to notify the police and get an FIR from your local police station. You also need to write a letter requesting the issue of a duplicate PAN card. (For escaping from any misuse of lost or misplaced PAN Card)

Second you need to fill in a change request or correction form. Download

"You can also download a correction form from the websites of UTI Technology Services Ltd (UTITSL), National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL), or the I-T department—‘www.utitsl.co.in’, ‘www.tin-nsdl.com’ or you can get a hard copy from any of the branches of UTITSL and NSDL. You can easily locate your nearest centre from the websites of UTITSL, NSDL or the I-T department."

You can also check your PAN details at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/knowpan/knowpan.jsp

Now fill out the lost PAN card information on the form. In case you don’t have the number, you can retrieve the number of the lost card from. You only need to fill your name, date of birth and your father’s name to get your lost card number.

Attach stamp-sized photograph along with cash 94. Submit your form at PAN application centers of UTITSL and NSDL, the addresses of which are available at the I-T department website and you will get a new card in 15 working days.
